Historically, Wabi conveyed the solitude of living in nature, far from the bustle of society, while Sabi evoked the image of lean or withered beauty, like a flower past its prime. However, during the 14th century, these two words underwent a transformation, adopting more positive connotations. Wabi came to symbolize the positive aspects of solitude in nature: a tranquil, rustic simplicity. Sabi, in contrast, began to extol the beauty of ageing, celebrating the weathered character and the serenity that comes with the passage of time, where inevitable wear evolves into a rich patina, and scars bear witness to experience.
