Historically, Wabi evoked the solitude of life in the heart of nature, removed from the hustle and bustle of society, while Sabi symbolized beauty in lean or withered forms, much like a flower past its prime. However, in the 14th century, these words evolved to embrace more positive connotations. Wabi began to signify the positive aspects of solitary communion with nature—a serene, rustic simplicity. Sabi, in contrast, began to celebrate the elegance of ageing, cherishing the weathered character and the serenity that time bestows.
